SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Illinois House and Senate will return to Springfield on August 31 for a special session focused on redistricting.
Lawmakers will discuss potential changes in the legislative maps passed by Democrats this spring. Data from the 2020 Census will be used to determine where changes need to be made.
House and Senate Democrats were notified of the one-day session on Friday.
House Speaker Chris Welch has invited the public to participate in public hearings being held ahead of the General Assembly’s return to the Capitol at the end of the month.
Both chambers approved the current legislative map on May 28. Gov. J-B Pritzker later signed the map into law on June 4.
Republicans had hoped the governor would veto the proposed map and support an independent redistricting process.
The first redistricting hearing is set for August 26.
