PEORIA, Ill. — Peoria Firefighters, Public Works, and Police were called to a large gas leak late Wednesday night.
Battalion Chief Stephen Rada said crews responded to the 2200 block of North Knoxville around 11 p.m., finding a outside gas meter sheared off next to a home.
Crews were not able to shut the gas off to the meter, and had to evacuate the home as it filled up with natural gas, causing concerns about a potential explosion.
One person was found outside in distress. They told firefighters another person was still inside the home.
Firefighters were able to get her out safely.
A two block radius was evacuated due to the gas leak, as dangerous levels of gas inside and outside the home were observed.
Ameren was also on-scene, digging up a section of Knoxville Avenue, between Thrush and Arcadia as crews worked to shut off the gas.
One person was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening issues.
N. Knoxville was reopened to normal traffic just after 4:30 a.m. Thursday.
