PEORIA, Ill. – A local Congressman says the fall of Afghanistan and the evacuation of the U.S. Embassy in Kabul are both the fault of President Joe Biden and his administration’s policies.
According to a news release Monday, U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood (R-Peoria) says both situations could have been avoided, had the Biden Administration showed leadership.
“For months, the White House and President Biden have ignored the warnings about the situation in Afghanistan by many in Congress and the defense communities,” LaHood said. “Despite the warnings, the Administration pushed ahead with an ill-advised, poorly planned, and needlessly rapid complete drawdown of America’s presence in Afghanistan in an attempt to seek a political victory before the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.”
LaHood said Biden disrespected U.S. Troops who have served in Afghanistan, who have helped to keep America safe in the 20 years since the attacks, and has also disrespected U.S. partners in the region.
“President Biden owns the horrific scenes to come from Afghanistan and his actions threaten the security of America and our allies,” said LaHood.
While the administration of now-former President Donald Trump announced a withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan in 2020, Biden also supported a withdrawal. Troops levels in that country are expected to temporarily increase to around 6,000.
