NORTH PEKIN, Ill. — Amazon has announced it has selected a 100,000 square foot facility in the Peoria area to serve as a new Fulfillment Center.
The existing warehouse, located at 1961 Edgewater in North Pekin, is expected to open for business by the middle of 2022.
Employment figures are still be solidified, but similar Fulfillment Centers across the country typically employ between 250 and 500 people. Wages at Amazon start at a minimum of $15 an hour.
“We are excited to have Amazon select our area for a Fulfillment Center,” said David Zimmerman, Chairman of the Board for Tazewell County, where the center will be located. “The jobs at Amazon will bring benefit not just to North Pekin and Tazewell County, but the entire region.”
Officials said the project has been in the works for nearly two years. Amazon worked with Joseph & Camper Commercial to look at locations in the Greater Peoria area.
A lease agreement was finalized between the property owner of the North Pekin facility and Amazon earlier this year. Renovations have not begun.
Amazon’s footprint in Illinois includes nine fulfillment and sorting centers, eight delivery stations, a technology hub, an air gateway and a regional air hub, employing over 36,000 people.
“We are excited to continue our investment in the state of Illinois and look forward to creating hundreds of new, full-time jobs,” said Caitlin Polochak, regional PR manager for Amazon.
Amazon typically starts the hiring process about a month before a facility opens.
