SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Tuesday reported the highest number of daily new cases since early May.
IDPH reported 2,682 new and probable cases Tuesday, a level not seen since May 7.
Testing has been increasing lately in the state, but so has the vaccination rate in the last week.
However, Gov. J.B. Pritzker repeated his call for people to be cautious.
“We want to strongly encourage people to wear masks indoors,” said Pritzker. “The most important thing you can do to keep yourself, community, your family safe is get vaccinated. It is easily available now.”
Pritzker continued on to say an overwhelming majority of people with severe illness from COVID-19 are unvaccinated.
“97% of the people who are in the hospital are unvaccinated,” said Pritzker. “Almost 98.5% of people who are dying from COVID across the nation are unvaccinated — so that should tell you something — get vaccinated.”
More than 1,100 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Illinois, according to IDPH.
Close to 59% of those 12 and older in Illinois are fully vaccinated, while nearly 67% have received at least one dose.
