CHICAGO — Illinois Gov. J-B Pritzker on Monday announced $1.5 billion in assistance for renters and landlords that have struggled during the pandemic.
Through the Illinois Rental Payment Program, the governor says, approved applicants can get up to $25,000 for rent due as far back as last June and to pre-pay through this August.
But, Pritzker said renter’s assistance is only one piece of the announcement.
“Later this summer, we’ll provide an additional $400 million, on top of the $1.5 million for renters, for mortgage assistance,” Pritzker said.
Pritzker added, Illinois’ current eviction moratorium will be phased out by August.
“This assistance is a grant. Meaning that it doesn’t need to be repaid,” said State Housing Development Authority Director Kristin Faust.
Right now, landlords and tenants can apply jointly for a grant.
