EAST PEORIA, Ill. — A longstanding East Peoria code outlawing for-profit street fairs could soon be changed.
The code currently states the only legal street fairs within city limits are ones of not-for-profit nature and ones connected to the East Peoria Centennial Celebration, held in 1984.
The request for amendment was brought to council by owners of The Picker’s Daughter at 125 E. Washington St.
Those owners told council they and owners of other nearby businesses would like to hold a street fair to capitalize on the interest the Folepi Shop and Stroll event brings to the area.
“The changes here that are being recommended are to clear up that old, antiquated code,” said Commissioner Mark Hill.
“The Folepi Shop and Stroll is what gave seed to this. Today, it would be very difficult for them to do it, so it’s cleaning up some antiquated code and allows for it to get approval for that kind of street fair to occur.”
The first reading passed unanimously. The amendment could come to fruition at next meeting, pending council approval.
