PEORIA, Ill. — The Peoria City/County Health Department Monday reported five area deaths due to COVID-19 since last Thursday, the last date the health department reported COVID metrics.
Four of the deaths from the long weekend occurred in Peoria County as a male in his 60s, a female in her 40s, a male in his 60s and a male in his 70s all succumbed to the virus.
Tazewell County accounted for the other area death, as a female in her 40s died from the virus.
795 new cases were reported in the tri-county between Thursday and Monday. 490 new cases came up in Peoria County, 236 new cases are in Tazewell County, and 69 new cases came up in Woodford County.
In addition, hospitalizations in the area due to COVID-19 increased over the weekend by 52.
As of Monday afternoon, 126 patients were in area hospital beds with the virus. Of those, 34 were in the ICU.
The positivity rate in Region 2 of Illinois, which encompasses Peoria, Tazewell and Woodford counties, has increased all the way to 6.5%.
Hospitalizations in the region overall have increased by 34 over the weekend.
ICU capacity is also lower in the region and is now at 22%.
On a good note, vaccine eligibility opened up to all residents in the tri-county area 16 and older.
Both Peoria County and Woodford County have one-day clinics on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, where they will administer the Johnson & Johnson one-dose vaccine.
