PEORIA, Ill. — Peoria Public Schools is considering moving to a “balanced calendar” in the 2022-2023 school year.
Parents are being asked to give their input on the potential change in an online survey.
“Tammy” is the parent of two PPS students that are very involved in traveling sports during the summer.
She told WMBD News that a “balanced schedule”, which would bring students back to the classroom in July instead of August, would disrupt her family’s summer.
“I know a lot of families that their kids do participate in summer sports, summer camps or other programs. And, I think it would have a big effect on that,” Tammy said.
What do students think about potentially giving up part of their summer?
“Jacob” is an eighth-grader at Von Stueben Middle School in Peoria.
“We’re not going to really have much time to relax or have fun. I’m honestly a little mixed about it,” Jacob said.
The PPS survey asks parents if they would prefer a “traditional”, “balanced” or “modified” schedule.
A “balanced schedule” would start the third week of July. A “modified schedule” would start at the beginning of August. The “traditional schedule” would be unchanged, bringing students back in mid-August.
The PPS School Board is expected to vote on the issue in April.
