PEORIA, Ill. — Public water throughout Peoria Metro is getting a $10 million upgrade.
Illinois American Water announced Tuesday afternoon it’s investing the money to replace 4.5 miles of water main, construct a storage tank, and replace a booster station.
The storage tank will hold 150,000 gallons of water and will replace the one at Lake Camelot. The existing one, the company said, will remain in service while the new one is built.
“The current tank was constructed almost 50 years ago in the 1970s, so it’s reached its useful lifespan,” said IAW External Affairs Manager Karen Cotton.
Construction of the tank is set to begin in spring 2021.
Similarly, the booster station project will consist of replacing an existing one. This booster station will be built in spring 2021 in Bartonville near Enterprise Dr.
The station will feature variable frequency drive motors, which the company said will be high efficiency, making the station more environmentally friendly than the currently existing one.
“They help to match pumping output to current demand,” Cotton explained.
“So, old technology basically pumped at one constant speed. This technology allows the pump to run as needed and at the speed that’s needed.”
Finally, the water main replacement will cover 23,000 feet of land in various areas in and around Peoria.
“If someone is in the area where there’s going to be a water main replacement project going on, they’re going to get a letter that tells them about the timeline of the project, about any impact to them, and any action they need to take,” Cotton said.
A couple of the larger stretches include Mossville Rd. from Indian Hill Ln. to State St., and the Toledo Ave. bike trail from Boulevard Ave. to Frances Ave.
