PEORIA, Ill. — After final results of the Peoria Township Supervisor’s race from the Feb. 23 primary were certified and showed a two-vote differential, incumbent Frank Abdnour has formally hired a law firm to oversee a discovery recount.
The results, which were tabulated after several recounts, showed challenger LaTrina Leary ahead of Abdnour, 3,130-3,128.
Abdnour said in a statement the Springfield, Ill.-based firm Sorling Northup will verify the accuracy of the result. Based on that, he said, he will decide whether or not it would be prudent to challenge the results in circuit court.
“Running for public office can be a daunting task, requiring a significant expenditure of time, energy and resources not only from the candidates themselves but from those who support them,” he said.
“Much is at stake — for the candidates personally and professionally, to be sure, but most importantly for those who would become their constituents. All of those elements were reflected in both campaigns.
“That said, in a race this close, I feel I owe it to those who believed in my candidacy – specifically my family and those who put their faith in me at the ballot box – to see this effort through to the end.”
A discovery recount is another term for a partial recount.
Peoria County Election Commission Executive Director Thomas Bride said it’s at the discretion of the challenger how many votes are recounted before they determine whether or not to take the case to court.
