PEORIA, Ill. — The idea of moving Peoria’s downtown post office to expand the Warehouse District isn’t a new one.
But, City officials are asking state lawmakers to help find the money to relocate it.
Peoria City Manager Patrick Urich told WMBD’s “The Greg and Dan Show” on Thursday, the price tag is about $10 million.
“If you have a facility that you could give them that is of lifetime, or you build a facility that would meet their needs, then they would take it and potentially consider moving,” Urich said.
The post office’s proximity to the riverfront and the Warehouse District makes it appealing for new residential construction, green space and commercial property.
The U.S. Postal Service owns one half of the 13-acres of land. Ameren owns the other half, which houses a natural gas facility.
“The postal service would be a willing partner in that. And, we would have to meet their needs,” Urich said.
Peoria would want to maintain a retail presence for the post office downtown if it were to be moved.
Urich said it could be May before the city knows if it will receive state money for the project.
