PEORIA, Ill. — Peoria firefighters were called around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday to the 1800 block of N. Bigelow on reports of a gas leak.
Ameren crews, that were already on the scene, detected a strong level of gas near the front door of a home with an odor of natural gas as well.
Fire Battalion Chief Steve Rada said crews went door-to-door to evacuate the neighborhood as a precaution, moving residents to a safe area.
Ameren was able to disconnect power and gas to the home with the leak to prevent an explosion or further incident.
“Once we were able to cut the power, we slowly let the gas out of the house to a safe level, so we could determine was caused the problem,” Rada said.
It was determined that a gas pipe from a stove outlet was left on, which discharged a substantial amount of gas.
“After about 25 minutes, we were able to mitigate the problem, and residents were allowed back in their homes,” Rada said.
No injuries were reported.
