HANNA CITY, Ill. — Three barns were completely destroyed during a Tuesday Hanna City fire that took the teamwork of eight fire departments to extinguish.
Logan-Trivoli firefighters were first to the scene around 3:15 P.M. at 14326 W. Smithville Rd.
Not only were the barns fully engulfed, but the house on the property and three other buildings were also beginning to catch fire.
“The wind during that time period was really blowing out of the south at 30-plus miles an hour, so it was really quite a fire,” said Chief David Tuttle.
“The first thing they did when they arrived was put water on the house to save it.”
The house and three other buildings ultimately were saved.
Tuttle said one of the destroyed barns housed sheep, but they got out safely, as did some cattle that were in harm’s way.
Another of the barns contained hay, while the third was used for machinery storage.
“It’s dark out there now,” Tuttle said the night of the fire, “so [we’re] really not able to get a good cost estimate, but I’m sure it’s pretty extensive.
“But no injuries, and no animals perished, so that’s great.”
Crews remained on scene until 7:30.
A cause was not immediately determined.
