PEORIA, Ill. — Peoria Public Schools (PPS) will offer Summer School to all students after the 2020-2021 school year, according to Dr. Nimisha Bhatt.
Bhatt presented the Summer School plan at Monday night’s board meeting.
Summer School will focus on student engagement, scientific-research based programs and maximization of teacher expertise, according to Bhatt.
Summer School for K-8 will consist of two three-week sessions. The first session runs from June 7 to June 24, while the second session runs from June 28 to July 14.
Summer School for 9th grade students will be during the first session and during the second session for high school students in grades 10-12.
Students that partake in Summer School in grades K-8 will be split into learning pods at their location with each pod having two learning facilitators, one literacy content facilitator, one math content facilitator and mini-course instructors.
According to Bhatt, days will be broken up into six sections which is different than a typical school day.
In March, the district plans to hire site supervisors before developing the curriculum in April.
“I’m hoping our families take advantage of it,” said PPS Superintendent Dr. Sharon Desmouslin-Kherat. “It fits in perfectly with our disruptive learning framework.”
