SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The winter storm that slammed most of the United States this week has wreaked havoc on COVID-19 vaccine shipments.
The Illinois Department of Public Health confirmed Wednesday only 55,000 of the allotted 365,000 doses for the week had arrived from the U.S. government, with more possibly being shipped that afternoon by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The state on Tuesday administered 40,380 doses, bringing the rolling seven-day average to 60,552.
A total of 1,795 people received positive test results between Tuesday and Wednesday. 24 people died.
1,719 virus patients as of Tuesday night were in hospitals statewide. Of them, 375 were in intensive care, while 176 were using ventilators.
Labs during the reporting period took in 49,937 specimens, a low number the IDPH said is attributable to the wintry road conditions.
