TAZEWELL COUNTY, Ill. — A Morton man, apparently driving the wrong way, was killed Wednesday night when his car hit a semi on I-74, near the 474 split in Tazewell County, according to Illinois State Police.
No other injuries were reported in the crash that happened at approximately 7:15 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-74 between mile markers 99 and 100.
The name of the car’s driver, a 62-year old man, will be released by the Tazewell County coroner following notification of family.
The ISP said a preliminary investigation showed the car was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes. The semi driver tried to avoid the crash, but the car collided with the truck’s rear tandem axle, causing the car to spin, ending up in a ditch, according to police.
A second vehicle went into a ditch on the other side of the road to avoid a crash.
The ISP reopened the eastbound lanes of I-74 around 9:45 p.m.
