PEORIA, Ill. — New Year’s may look different to start 2021 for local gyms, but it also has a similar feel to previous years.
According to Statista, exercising more is Americans top New Year’s resolution, which means more people signing up for gym memberships.
An increase in memberships is still being seen, even in the middle of a pandemic, said Landmark Health Club Manager Cassie Zell.
“We have seen some increase in enrollment compared to the last couple months,” said Zell. “I would like to attribute that to the New Year’s rush that we typically have.”
Ryan Hinnen, Senior Director of Mission Advancement at Peoria YMCA, had the same thoughts.
“Memberships are increasing right now like we would expect normally,” said Hinnen. “However, they are down when you compare it to years before.”
Zell and Hinnen both said some people may have worries about going to the gym while the COVID-19 pandemic continues.
However, they said most people realize the gym is safe after seeing precautions, such as social distancing and mask wearing, in place.
“We’ve got third-shift crews that are here that clean every department of the complex,” said Zell. “The complex has never been cleaner than it is now.”
Hinnen said the YMCA is also doing their part in making sure equipment is sanitary.
“We did a survey recently of our members, and I’m happy to say that 96% of them say we are doing a great job of keeping things clean,” said Hinnen. “We’re shooting for 100%, but we feel really good about almost all of them saying we’re doing a good job and they feel comfortable.
“We have a fresh towel and spray bottle for [members] when they come in the door.”
Both facilities said they take temperatures before members enter the building as well as wipe equipment down intermittently throughout the day.
The Peoria YMCA and Landmark Health Club are running specials, both for $20 a month, on memberships for people to get started on their fitness journey in 2021.
