PEORIA, Ill. — We couldn’t have asked for a more toxic combination of things happening at the same time.
That’s how UnityPoint Health’s Dr. Ted Bender describes ongoing effects of an unsettled presidential election, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the stress of the upcoming holidays.
“As Americans, we really need a break. And, we really need to focus on decompression and mental and physical wellness,” Bender said.
Bender suggests finding time to focus on a more healthy diet, getting enough sleep, and getting outside for some exercise.
Many of us are feeling the mental and emotional effects still lingering from the November election and fears related to soaring cases of COVID-19.
Bender said the holidays can add to the stress and anxiety we’re likely already feeling, and possibly tack on feelings of loneliness and depression as well.
“As much as possible, utilitize Zoom and online video conferencing to bring family together, if you can’t be together for the holidays,” Bender said.
If you are feeling depressed or overwhelmed, don’t hesistate to talk to someone about it, even if that’s a counselor.
