SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — After weeks of schools deciding whether to play winter sports this season or not, it looks like that decision is no longer in their hands.
Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Executive Director Craig Anderson said in a statement Tuesday evening that all winter sports will be temporarily paused due to Gov. Pritzker’s announcement of the state’s return to Tier Three mitigation.
“We remain optimistic that these new mitigations, coupled with the emergence of a vaccine, will aid in creating participation opportunities in the New Year for IHSA student-athletes,” said Anderson.
Representatives from Gov. Pritzker’s office declined to attend the IHSA Board of Directors meeting Thursday, but Anderson says he’s looking forward to a collaborative effort going forward.
“We have asked Deputy Gov. Ruiz and Dr. Ezike to engage with us in the near future, so that we can collaborate on developing a plan to safely conduct IHSA sports and activities as soon as possible,” said Anderson.
Anderson added that even though the invitation to the meeting was declined, today’s announcement by Gov. Pritzker will aid the board in their decision making.
