PEKIN, Ill. — Tazewell County Sheriff Jeff Lower confirms that the Tazewell County Jail is currently experiencing an outbreak of COVID-19.
Lower said 39 inmates and six staff members have tested positive for the virus. All of the cases are confined to one of the jail’s housing units.
Tazewell County Jail is currently on lockdown and all inmates are quarantined to their cells.
Testing for the virus began earlier this week. All 140 inmates have been tested and their results have come back.
This is the first outbreak of COVID-19 that the Tazewell County Jail has experienced since the beginning of the pandemic.
