PEORIA, Ill. — Peoria emergency crews were called just after 9:30 a.m. Monday to an accident in the 6800 block of Galena Road.
Fire Battalion Chief Steve Rada said a woman’s vehicle struck an unoccupied garbage truck while she was travelling at a significant rate of speed. The driver was trapped inside the vehicle.
“It took us probably anywhere from 12 to 15 minutes to free the occupant from the vehicle. Remove her, immobilize her, for transport to the hospital,” Rada said.
The woman suffered significant injuries in the crash, but her condition was unavailable.
“Unfortunately, as a result of the accident, she had a small dog with her that died. We did contact the Peoria County Animal Control, which came to the scene to take care of the deceased dog,” Rada said.
Crews used the “Jaws of Life” to free the woman from the car, which was a total loss.
