SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — With more cars on the roads this holiday weekend, Illinois State Police will be out in force.
State Trooper Jayme Bufford said stepped up enforcement on Labor Day weekend will be focused on seat belt usage.
“We will also be focusing on distracted driving, along with driving under the influence, whether that be alcohol, drugs, or a combination, as well as speeding. Those are our Fatal Four,” Bufford said.
Since January 1, the ISP has issued 6,736 citations to people not wearing their seat belts.
“We’ve also issued 5,078 warnings to people not wearing their seat belts, or not wearing them properly. And, we’ve issued 980 child restraint citations as of September 1st,” Bufford said.
She adds,”It is a big deal. We’ve seen plenty of crashes where the person may have not been injured, or survived the crash, if they’d been wearing a seat belt.”
With so many people traveling over Labor Day weekend, it’s imperative that everyone buckles up, according to Bufford.
