Bloomington, Ill. — The Illinois High School Association has taken heat on a recent decision to forgo state championships for all fall sports.
IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson told WMBD’s Greg and Dan Show, the fall sports season will end with smaller, regional-based tournaments.
“This is hopefully a way to culminate their seasons in a safe and appropriate manner,” Anderson said.
Illinois state government has asked the IHSA to limit the number of athletes at events to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.
“So, it’s two-fold. Students from a variety of regions and the numbers that we would get in one location,” Anderson said.
Cross Country, Golf, Girls’ Tennis and Girls’ Swimming and Diving will end their seasons with “entry-level” tournaments.
The IHSA’s Football, Soccer and Volleyball seasons have been moved to the spring.
“The IHSA Board only took action on fall sports in hopes that during the year, there might be an opportunity to expand tournaments,” Anderson said.
