PEORIA, Ill. — Peoria Public Schools will be investing in two new intervention resources for children in grades K-8.
The Board of Education approved Monday night the purchases of Waterford and Lexia Learning to support tier 2 and tier 3 intervention needs.
Tier 2 intervention is for students who need additional support in addition to the core curriculum provided in tier 1; while tier 3 interventions are for students who demonstrate a level of need beyond tier 2, according to the Illinois State Board of Education.
Waterford will be used for grades K-2 and provides early literacy and math skills for students. Waterford is a digital only program, so students will be able to use the platform at school and home.
Lexia Learning will be used for grades 3-8 for added support for tier 2 and tier 3 students and teachers. Lexia, like Waterford, is also available digitally.
Since both programs are available digitally, teachers will still be able to use the programs and assist students in a remote setting.
Superintendent Dr. Sharon Desmoulin-Kherat said that the programs would not replace what teachers are doing, but they will provide an additional tool.
“Kids need a variety of ways to present the information to them,” said Kherat. “In addition to good teaching, using technology to supplement and fill in those skills they may have missed or were never taught.”
The total cost of Lexia will be $83,767. The total cost of Waterford will cost $60,000 to provide 1,500 K-2 licenses. Both programs will be paid for from District Curriculum funds.
