PEORIA, Ill. — Peoria Public Schools announced on Monday night a decision to switch from a hybrid learning plan for the start of the school year to a virtual learning plan.
PPS Superintendent Dr. Sharon Desmoulin-Kherat said though it may have left families scrambling a bit with just a week before school starts, the decision was made with the safety of students and and their teachers in mind.
Though state law requires E.L.L. (English Language Learners) and students with individualized learning plans (I.E.P.) to receive daily in-person instruction if all at possible, those students will also have the option of online learning as they return to classes.
“With these platforms you get grading, you get assessments, you get projects, you get supported lessons, you get additional support from a live person. And, I really like that platform,” Kherat said.
Kherat said students involved in special programs at Woodruff Career and Technical Center will still have to show up from time to time, but
but will complete most of their work at home.
Kherat reminds parents that the district’s plans for the start of the new school year are still a bit fluid.
“Our system is very flexible. We’re able to meet the needs as much as possible with safety,” Kherat said.
