EAST PEORIA, Ill. — East Peoria Community High School will start the 2020-21 school year with all remote learning.
9.3 inches of rain that fell in a matter of an hour and a half on July 15, caused flooding that will require asbestos abatement to replace flooring in the industrial wing of the school.
“A lot of the floor tiles now are curling. Most of them are either themselves asbestos, or the mastic used with them are asbestos,” said District 309 Superintendent Marjorie Greuter.
Greuter said if this had been a normal year, they would be looking at pushing back school by two months and going into next summer that far.
“But, because we’ve got this opportunity for remote learning, we decided that was the best way to go,” said Greuter.
East Peoria Community High School will be closed for two to three months. The district had planned to reopen with in-person classes five days a week.
Greuter said she hopes to have EPCHS students back in the classroom by mid-September.
