PEORIA COUNTY, Ill. — Emergency crews and police were called at approximately 2:31 a.m. Thursday to the 600 block of S. Cameron Lane in Peoria County.
Initial reports indicated a roll over accident with a vehicle possibly on fire.
Upon arrival, first responders from the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office, Limestone Fire Department and Advanced Medical Transport found a Ford Ranger fully engulfed in flames in a ditch on the west side of the road.
“The driver of the truck, 16-year-old Lucas Smith, of Norwood, was traveling northbound on Cameron Lane when the vehicle rolled and caught fire,” said Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood.
Smith was ejected from the vehicle. He was taken to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in critical condition.
“Despite intensive treatment, he succumbed to his injuries Friday just after 6 p.m.,” Harwood said.
There will not be an autopsy. Toxicology tests are pending.
The incident remains under investigation by the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office.
