PEORIA, Ill. — How can we get past the violence?
Congressman Darin LaHood, who represents Illinois’ 18th District, believes in regards to violence that’s erupted since the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, the country is looking for healing, calm, a sense of empathy, humility and respect.
“That comes from showing leadership. Having powerful voices that show in particular how our urban communities are hurting,” LaHood said.
LaHood told WMBD’s Greg and Dan, he’s impressed with the dialogue that’s going on between Peoria’s leaders like Carl Cannon (of ELITE), Rev. Marvin Hightower of the local NAACP, and law enforcement.
Working together, he said, they can bring the community together.
But, LaHood said, everyone needs to be part of the dialogue, including our young people.
“Particularly here in Peoria, we have to reach out and get them at the table. Find those young people that want to step up, represent their community, and be a part of that. That is absolutely key,” LaHood said.
