PEORIA,Ill. — The Illinois River is still rising.
Peoria Public Works Department and Flood Fighters spent most of the day Tuesday constructing a six foot, 1,250 foot long ring of sandbags along the back of River Station on Water Street.
Sandbags along the riverfront currently stretch from the parking lot of Liberty Street to the Martini’s On Water Street parking lot.
Sie Maroon, with Peoria Public Works, said work began Wednesday morning on a four-foot wall along the front of River Station.
“By the end of the day today (Wednesday), we should be over into the Liberty lot, and have at least the initial wall that we’re going to have constructed. We may have to add a couple of sections.”
Maroon said additional sandbagging may be required as the Illinois River continues to rise along the riverfront.
Current projections from the National Weather Service in Lincoln antipicate the Illinois River at Peoria cresting at 27.7 feet by Friday morning.
