PEORIA, Ill. — It’s time to brush up on your tennis skills.
With recommended modifications in place, the Peoria Park District is set to reopen its tennis and pickleball courts for play on Wednesday, Wednesday, May 6.
Peoria Park District Executive Director Emily Cahill said the decision came after revised guidance from both the United States Tennis Association and the USA Pickleball Association was issued last week in regards to safety concerns due to COVID-19.
Peoria Park District staff also consulted with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity prior to making the decision to reopen the courts.
“Our first priority continues to be public safety. While we stand by our decision to close our courts during April, we believe that the revised guidance, combined with player attention to social distancing along with with limited interaction before and after matches, allows safe play,” Cahill said.
“We’re happy to offer this amenity, but will not hesitate to close the courts again if safety issues present themselves.”
Cahill said washing and sanitizing hands before, during and after play, limiting the sharing of balls, and honoring maximum group size limits, which has been set at 10 individuals.
Players should also not loiter before or after playing matches.
Peoria Park District tennis and pickleball courts were closed to the public on April 16.
