BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — There will be no spring high school state sports tournaments in Illinois.
The Illinois High School Association Board of Directors met Tuesday via videoconference to discuss the matter.
“You just feel so sorry for the seniors. You feel sorry for the kids that have come back from injury that aren’t getting the chance to put the uniform on,” said Brien Dunphy, Peoria Public Schools Athletic Director.
Dunphy said he’d like to honor the senior spring student athletes this fall.
“I think senior night for spring athletes is something we’ll consider,” he said.
“I love the idea of introducing the spring seniors at a homecoming football game.
“But right now those are just conceptual and not plans.”
The IHSA said the decision to cancel was in conjunction with Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s announcement Friday to keep school buildings closed and continue virtual learning through the end of the 2019-2020 school year
