BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart is shuttering 269 stores globally.
The grocery store chain said Monday that 154 stores that will be closed are in the U.S. The company said the closings represent less than 1% of its global square footage and revenue.
The U.S. store closings — which include all of Walmart’s Express locations — are happening by the end of January or the beginning of February 2021.
Walmart officials said there are plans to open 50 to 60 new Supercenters and 85 to 95 neighborhood markets in the U.S.
Walmart said about 10,000 of its 2.2 million employees will be impacted by the closings. Two of the stores being closed in the U.S. are located in Illinois.
