PEORIA, Ill. — The virtual classroom is still a new concept to everyone.
Since Illinois’ mandatory stay-at-home order began, Peoria Public Schools staff and students have been using online tools to get school work done, including Microsoft Teams.
PPS Superintendent Dr. Sharon Desmoulin-Kherat told WMBD’s Greg and Dan, she’s quite proud of the students’ online participation so far, which is well above the national average.
“The national report for online learning remotely is 40% of your kids,” Kherat said.
PPS’ primary schools participation online is currently 69%. At the middle school level it’s 74%. And, at the high schools it’s 60%.
Kherat said despite some lower numbers on the first day back from Easter break, the district’s students are doing a good job with virtual learning.
“Those principals, their support staff and teachers, if kids are not reporting virtually, they’re like ‘I’m missing five’ and the team goes out to find out what’s happening.”
