PEORIA, Ill. — A taste of winter hit the Peoria area Monday with snow in the morning and slick roads in the evening.
Illinois State Police spokesperson Haylie Polistina said to remember to slow down in hazardous conditions.
“The weather has been really cold and the wind has been blowing so it’s been making driving conditions really dangerous,” Polistina. “We’re seeing people off in the ditch, we’re seeing car accidents. People need to just take it slow.”
Polistina said in these kinds of conditions, it is best to make sure that your car is in good condition before taking off and making sure there is enough gas.
If you do end up in the ditch while driving, Polistina said to make sure to keep your windows rolled up.
“Make sure that your heat is on and you should make sure that your exhaust pipe is clear and that there is no snow in the way, so you won’t get poison or gas in your vehicle,” Polistina said. “You should call 911. Make sure your phone batter is charged. And just remain in your vehicle until help arrives.”
Polistina also recommends not using cruise control while driving in hazardous conditions.
“Because that can cause you to not be in control of your vehicle,” Polistina said.
